Molding Moments: What Pottery Taught Me About Life and Leadership
One weekend, quite unexpectedly during a staycation, I happened to enter a pottery session, curious to see and explore what it feels like! I had never tried pottery before, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much, just a creative break from the usual rhythm of life.
But what happened at that wheel stayed with me far beyond the session.
During my first attempt, it felt impossible! The clay moved in all directions and I had no control over it. My mind was everywhere!
As it clearly wasn’t working, the trainer gave me a simple instruction: “Forget everything, calm yourself and focus completely, if you lose attention, you’ll ruin it.”
The moment I heard that, something shifted. I stopped trying to control the outcome and instead focused on the process. I turned off the noise in my head and followed his guidance. With time, the shapeless lump of clay transformed, I was able to control it. It wasn’t perfect, but it was mine and more importantly, it was intentional.
That’s when I realised: this wasn’t just about clay. It was a mirror for life and leadership.
So often in our lives, especially as leaders, we try to do too much at once. We juggle priorities, attend back-to-back meetings, make critical decisions, and still try to be available everywhere we are needed. We have 1000 things on our mind which affects our output and efficiency. When we try to do everything together, we burn out, the quality of our work & relationships get hampered. In that pottery class, I realized how easy it is to destroy something beautiful simply by being distracted. How fragile creation can be. But also, how powerful our impact is when guided by clarity.
There are two takeaways I carried with me from that experience, and I believe they resonate with anyone who has ever led a team, built a business, or tried to grow through change:
- Focus is a Practice, Not a Trait – It’s not about being naturally focused; it’s about practicing focus. Like the wheel, life keeps spinning. Your job is to realign yourself and keep your hands & thoughts steady.
- What You Shape, Shapes You – That little clay pot didn’t just come from my hands; it also changed something in me. Every experience we pour ourselves into, with care and intention, leaves us transformed.
I learned that the creation of anything meaningful requires stillness, focus, and faith. That’s just like clay, life is in our hands.
We may not be able to control every spin, but we create an impact by leading it with focus, in the right direction.
Have you ever had a “pottery moment”, an unexpected experience that shaped the way you see life or leadership?
I’d love to hear from you. What are you trying to mold in your life right now, and what’s helping you stay focused?
Let’s reflect, share, and shape this journey together.
