From the Hilltop: A Lesson in the Journey
“It’s never about the destination, it’s about the journey.”
We’ve all heard this saying before, but during a recent trip, it really resonated with me.
I unexpectedly extended my trip to trek the state’s highest peak, Mullayanagiri, while I was in Karnataka. I was trekking there for the first time, and to be honest, it felt unreal. Misty trails, endless greens, and the quietness that makes you listen to your own breath.
Halfway through the climb, I stopped to ask a fellow traveler, who was on his way down that “what’s up there”. he smiled and said, “There’s a temple… and it’s beautiful up there.
Driven by that image, I kept going. Step by step, breath by breath, I finally made it. And yes, the view was beautiful. The temple stood calmly amidst the clouds. But what struck me more than anything else was a quiet realization.
The real beauty wasn’t in reaching the top. It was on the journey up there. The thoughts that surfaced. The stillness in my mind. The moments when I paused and took it all in.
That’s when it hit me, this wasn’t just about the trek. It was about work. It was about life.
As someone who facilitates corporate training, I often see how easy it is for people to focus on finishing a project, completing a session, or achieving a milestone. But growth doesn’t only happen when the task is done.
It happens in the process, in the learning, the discovery, the conversations, and the reflection.
Whether we’re trekking up a hill or building an organization or working on a project or designing a training program, it’s not just about reaching the end. It’s about how we show up along the way. Are we present? Are we learning? Are we taking a moment to breathe?
So the next time you’re chasing a goal or leading a team through a transformation, remember: Pause. Reflect. Absorb.
Pause to see where you have reached – acknowledge the milestones, however small, and honor the journey so far.
Reflect on what you’ve learned along the way – what’s working, what’s not, and what needs to change to move forward with purpose.
Absorb the insights, the lessons, and the growth. Let them sink in deeply so they can guide your next steps with clarity and intention.
Because the summit/ destination/ getting on the top is just a moment, but the journey is what stays with you.
