Carpe Diem: Making the Most of Life “A Bottle, a Lesson, and a Lifetime of Gratitude”

July 18, 2025 , Blog

Life is full of unexpected moments—those small, seemingly insignificant events that, in hindsight, leave a lasting impact. These moments often remind us of the importance of “Carpe Diem,” the Latin phrase that urges us to seize the day and live fully in the present. We often think of grand gestures or life-altering decisions when we hear this phrase, but sometimes, it’s the little actions that teach us the most profound lessons.

I had one such experience while travelling in the remote hills of Meghalaya, an experience that showed me the true meaning of selflessness and generosity. While I was moving from a small town to Cherrapunji, I felt very thirsty so stopped at a small roadside stall to grab a bottle of water. Without thinking twice, I opened it and drank, only to realize I had no cash. I had been relying on digital payments like Google Pay for so long that I didn’t even consider the possibility that I might not be able to use it here.

Embarrassed and a little panicked, I asked the vendor, if he had Wi-Fi so I could make an online payment. He smiled gently and said, “Madam, Wi-Fi doesn’t work here, and the internet connectivity is quite poor.” My heart sank as I realized I had no way to pay him. I felt terrible for drinking the water without being able to pay, and I stood there, unsure of what to do next.

But then, something unexpected happened. The vendor looked at me and said, “No problem, madam. It’s okay. You’re a tourist, and I understand there can be challenges. I won’t charge you for this bottle and in return you’ll remember me forever”. He added, “In return, you know, you can do something nice for someone else.” He wasn’t just letting go of the payment; he was teaching me a lesson for life.

It felt like a scene straight out of a movie—those moments where someone says something so wise and generous that it changes you. In that small, remote village, I experienced a kindness that I’ll never forget. The vendor showed me that deeds and compassion are far more valuable than money.

Determined to pay, I walked up to the car driver who had brought me there and asked if he had Rs 10. Thankfully, he did. I hurried back to the stall and handed the money to the vendor. “I will remember you forever,” I said, “but here is the money. Thank you so much for teaching me something that will stay with me for life.”

This small encounter reminded me that life isn’t just about the big moments but also about the small acts of kindness that we can offer and receive every day. As I continue on my journey, both in travel and in entrepreneurship, I carry this lesson with me – “Carpe Diem” isn’t just about seizing big opportunities; it’s about making the most of every moment, every interaction, and every chance to do good. It’s about living with purpose and being open to the lessons that life offers us, often when we least expect them.

What about you? Have you ever had an unexpected experience that left a lasting impact on your life? I’d love to hear your stories and thoughts on how you embrace “Carpe Diem” in your daily life.
